As part of the celebration of M.U.S.T.’s 24th Anniversary, the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (F.H.T.M) held the third “Three Minute Thesis Competition(3MT®)” on April 18th, 2024. This was an individual competition which was sponsored by MGM. The competition attracted 63 bachelor students and graduate students to participate in the preliminary competition and 24 of them reached the final. It was an honor to have Mr. Francis Tan, MGM Vice President of Learning & Talent Management, Prof. Ben K. Goh, Dean of F.H.T.M, Dr. Lee Hoffer Ming and Dr. Kim Jinkyung, Assistant Professor of F.H.T.M as judges for this competition. The competition has attracted more than 100 Faculty members and students to attend.

Prof. Ben K. Goh, Dean of F.H.T.M welcomed Mr. Francis Tan and the representatives from MGM and presented the certificate of appreciation to Mr. Francis Tan for their support to the competition. Prof. Goh expressed that 3MT® is one of the most popular competitions in the world. The idea behind it is to increase researchers’ academic, presentation, research communication skills, and the capacities needed to effectively explain a research topic in three minutes and in an appropriate use of language to a non-specialist audience.

In the competition, each contestant was given three minutes to make an academic presentation. Judges scored the candidates based on their performance and the winners’ list is as follows:

After the competition, the judges commented on the performance of the contestants, they affirmed the performance of the contestants and wished the students would continue to work hard and try their best. Prof. Goh hoped more students would participate in the competition in the future, the contestants also said it was a good opportunity for them to showcase themselves and to gain experiences. By listening to other contestants’ presentations, they could also expand their research horizons, improve their presentation skills, and learn from each other.

Since the signing of Tourism+ Talent Development Partnership MOU between F.H.T.M. and MGM in December 2021, visits, seminars, and competitions have been successfully held. The students have visited MGM to learn about room management, restaurant, and kitchen operations, students were able to learn more about hotel operations through site visits. In the future, F.H.T.M. and MGM will jointly organize more seminars and activities to bring more learning and practical opportunities to students.
