The Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the Macau University of Science and Technology successfully hosted an academic lecture on October 10, 2024, titled “New Demand Structures in the Chinese Outbound Tourism Market and the Reaction of a Major Destination.” The distinguished guest speaker was Professor Wolfgang Georg Arlt, CEO of the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute, who delivered an insightful lecture on the evolving demands of Chinese outbound tourism. The lecture was attended by Professor Ben K. Goh, Dean of FHTM, Professor Timothy Lee, Vice-Dean of FHTM, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor Zhang Yang, several other faculty members, and over 150 students.

Professor Wolfgang Georg Arlt from Germany founded the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute in 2004 and has served as its director ever since. He first visited China in 1978. From 1991 to 1999, he owned Inbound Tour Operator China-Europe. He is a Professor of International Tourism Management at the West Coast University of Applied Sciences in Germany (Heide). A visiting professor in several international universities, he is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Researcher for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and a Member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization Panel of Tourism Experts.

Prof. Arlt highlighted destinations’ strategic plans for Chinese travelers in 2025, referencing the case of Chinese tourists visiting Germany. This lecture attracted great interest among students, sparking lively discussions, with many actively participating in the Q&A session. This event provided a deeper understanding of the Chinese outbound tourism market and offered students valuable insights into international tourism strategies.
