The Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM) at Macau University of Science and Technology warmly welcomed its new cohort of students with a vibrant Orientation Ceremony held on August 31, 2026, at the R109 Auditorium. The event drew over 500 faculty members and students, filling the venue with energy and enthusiasm.

The ceremony kicked off with a captivating performance by students Zhang Mengge, Xie Xin, Yu Yangming, and Zhou Minghan, setting an uplifting tone for the afternoon. Dean of FHTM, Professor Ben K. Goh, then took the stage to extend a heartfelt welcome to the incoming students. In his address, he encouraged them to embrace exploration and pursue their aspirations throughout their university journey. Dean Goh emphasized that beyond academic excellence, students should cultivate cross-cultural awareness, build meaningful relationships, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. He urged them to actively engage in international exchange programs, academic competitions, internships, and student organizations to build a solid foundation for their future careers.

Welcome Speech by Dean Ben K. Goh
Assistant Dean, Professor Jose Wong Weng Chou, provided an overview of the Faculty’s history, academic team, and educational resources, giving new students a thorough understanding of FHTM’s distinctive strengths and learning environment. Two outstanding student representatives, Lareina Yang Yalin and Gracie Zhang Ziqing, shared their personal journeys. Lareina spoke on the theme “From Drifting to Finding Light”, recounting how she gradually found her direction and encouraging her peers to embrace uncertainty and have the courage to pause and restart. Gracie offered practical advice from three perspectives, academics, student activities, and city life, highlighting the importance of proactively bridging information gaps, fostering collaboration, and developing self-discipline while making the most of Macao as a “second classroom”.

During the ceremony, Dean Goh presented the FHTM Excellence Awards for the 2025–2026 academic year, recognizing outstanding contributions in teaching, research, and service. Certificates of appreciation were also awarded to members of the Student Consultative Committee, and the FHTM Team Excellent Helper Award was presented to several dedicated student assistants in acknowledgment of their commitment to faculty events and community service.

Vice-President of the FHTM Student Union, Duan Xinran, introduced the Union’s structure and exciting annual activities, encouraging freshmen to get involved and develop new skills beyond the classroom. Mr. David Ao, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the FHTM Alumni Association, extended a warm welcome on behalf of alumni and emphasized the Association’s role as a vital bridge between current students and graduates, offering continuous support and networking opportunities.
