On December 2, 2024, the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Macau University of Science and Technology successfully held a seminar titled “China - An Important Missing Piece in the World of Wine” in O205. The seminar was hosted by Assistant Professor Feng Yan, Program Director of Bachelor of International Tourism Management. Mr. Kevin Chen who is also a MUST alumni was invited to deliver a speech on sharing the history of Chinese wine and exploring the development opportunities of Chinese wine under the “Belt and Road” initiative. Over 50 students from the faculty attended the seminar.
Mr. Kevin Chen, as the co-founder of Siesta and Tinnyu Winery in Shangri-La. achieved sixth place in the national competition of the RVF Wine Blind Tasting World Championships in China in 2021. He also served as a judge for the China region at the Frankfurt International Wine Trophy.
During the seminar, Mr. Kevin Chan first introduced the history of Chinese wine, tracing its origins from grape winemaking at the Jiahu site in Henan to the introduction of European and Asian grape varieties during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. He also discussed the flourishing period of wine during the Yuan Dynasty and its contemporary development, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Chinese wine.
Subsequently, Mr. Kevin Chan showcased four types of Chinese wine and taught wine appreciation techniques. He engaged in discussions with the faculty and students, exploring how the Chinese wine industry can achieve innovative development under the "Belt and Road" initiative and further enhance its international influence and market competitiveness. This event allowed students to understand the thriving growth of the Chinese wine industry and recognize that China has its own high-quality wines with unique characteristics and flavors. Students should view Chinese wine from a global perspective while also appreciating it through their own cultural lens.
