To enhance students' understanding of classroom theoretical knowledge and enhancing their practical awareness, and professional qualities, Dr. Salott Chau from the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Macau University of Science and Technology led the class of Rooms Management (HMGT2401 DE1) to visit Pousada de Sâo Tiago da Barra Macau on March 10, 2025.

Following the guidance of the staff representatives, the whole class had a direct observation of the hotel. During the journey, the hotel representative introduced the historical background of the ancient castle and the overall overview of the hotel. This hotel has been developed from an ancient castle of the 17th century, with complete Portuguese architecture style including its unique features and cultural heritage as it was transformed from an ancient castle. Then they visited the Chapel of St. James, Wishing Well and also the ancient trees (over 100 to 500 years of history).
Next, they moved to the guest room area. The team leader introduced the layout and style of the guest rooms, as well as the characteristics of different room types due to the building structure. The hotel has equipped with modern facilities while retaining the original elements of the ancient castle, achieving a combination of retro and comfort. Two featured guest suites were specially opened for the students to visit. They showed great interest in the integration of antique decorations and modern facilities. Finally, they entered the restaurant and learned that it specializes in Portuguese cuisine, with strict standards for ingredient selection and dish preparation. During the Q&A session, the supervisors answered questions regarding handling special catering requests and dealing with cultural differences, and the students benefited greatly. They had a deeper understanding of theoretical knowledge enhancing their horizon through direct observation and new thoughts on their future career development, making it a highly valuable experience.
